Directional Drilling

Department of Directional Drilling

Directional drilling is a modern technology that involves drilling a horizontal pilot hole below the earth’s surface. Professional horizontal drilling is a variation of directional drilling, it falls into a group called trenchless technology. It is a technology that is used in many fields. Thanks to the use of the latest control and measurement systems, the trajectory of the drilling we perform, along with the location of the exit point, perfectly coincides with the design of the planned drilling. HDD technology (Horizontal Directional Drilling) allows us to perform this type of directional drilling in highly urbanized areas. Read on to learn how directional drilling works.

Without Destroying the Terrain

Trenchless Method

Steerable drilling is a technology that allows you to perform various types of installations (water supply, sewerage, gas pipelines, power lines). Wherever it is impossible to make an open excavation for pipes or cables. The entire process takes place underground, we avoid any obstacles.Cały proces przebiega pod ziemią, omijamy wszelkie przeszkody.

Precise Process

Along with the Measurement System.

The systems we use allow precise steering and real-time tracking of the entire drilling process. Drilling angle (azimuth), head angle and current depth. Radio technology is used here.

More Efficient Work

Shorter time compared to conventional methods

Work through guided drilling is much more efficient, the customer has more time for other work. Copco makes every effort to ensure that the guided drilling performed is of the highest quality, while maintaining a fast turnaround time.

What is
horizontal
directional drilling?

With this advanced technology, we can significantly shorten the route of the pipeline without destroying the land. The entire process goes underground precisely following the drilling route, avoiding any terrain obstacles. If we want to drill, for example, under a road without obstructing traffic, horizontal drilling is the best idea because there is no need to stop traffic.

FURTHER ADVANTAGES ARE:

non-disturbance of the land, there is no need to incur costs associated with repairing damage that may occur during excavation methods,
lower price, in cases where traditional excavation will not work,
guided drilling allows for much more efficient work, the client has more time for other work,
Horizontal guided drilling can be used even in hard-to-reach areas.

How does guided drilling work?

The first process is to make a design of the route that the pilot drilling will take. The next step is to drill through the previously planned route (drilling a pilot hole). The drilling is performed by a special steerable head (poles with a fin). The head is controlled by a transmitter placed in it with a programmed route, thanks to this probe it is possible to locate and improve the trajectory so that the drilling is as accurate as possible.

What happens to the spoils that the head has dug up?

During pilot drilling, a “bentonite mud” is fed into the head to transport the excavated material, stabilize the completed tunnel and cool the drill rig. After the pilot hole is drilled, the mud hardens, strengthens the entire drill hole, and helps the pipeline settle more easily.

When is it a good idea to do professional guided drilling?

We use HDD technology: in heavily urbanized areas, when overcoming obstacles in the form of traffic routes, in areas with a dense network of various installations, when crossing rivers and canals, when overcoming mountains and hills, when running network installations through areas that should be left intact due to natural values.
